Stone Town’s seafront at dusk 1

Forodhani Gardens

Seafront park facing the harbour and the starting point of this tour. By day it is a shady lawn in front of the sea wall; by night it becomes Zanzibar's most famous street-food market. Look across the water to the port and the dhow masts.

Heritage
The Old Fort amphitheatre, Stone Town 2

Old Fort (Ngome Kongwe)

Directly next to Forodhani: a 17th-century Omani fort built around 1698-1701 on the site of a Portuguese chapel, with 1.5-metre-thick coral-stone walls. Inside is an open-air amphitheatre used during the ZIFF film festival and a row of curio stalls.

Beit al-Ajaib, the House of Wonders 3

House of Wonders (Beit-al-Ajaib)

The grandest building on the seafront, raised in 1883 as a ceremonial palace for Sultan Barghash: the first building in East Africa with electricity and an elevator, and Zanzibar's national history museum until part of it collapsed in 2020. Interior visits depend on restoration progress - the facade, terrace and cannons are still the town's most photographed corner.

The Palace Museum on Mizingani Road 4

Palace Museum (Beit al-Sahel)

A short walk south along Mizingani Road: the white palace that housed the Omani sultans until the 1964 revolution, now a museum of royal furniture, portraits and household rooms. The seafront balcony views are part of the exhibit's charm.

The Old Dispensary, Stone Town 5

Old Dispensary (Ithnasheri Dispensary)

Walk back toward the port: a flamboyant 1887 building financed by a wealthy Indian merchant community, mixing Gothic, Victorian and Swahili details with carved balconies. Restored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture; the ground floor cafe is a good espresso stop.

Heritage Carved door
St Joseph’s Cathedral, Stone Town 6

St. Joseph's Cathedral

A Gothic-style Catholic cathedral built by French missionaries between 1893 and 1898, with coral-stone walls, twin spires and tall stained glass. It is a working parish church - enter quietly, and dress modestly.

Religious
Christ Church, former slave market site 7

Christ Church & Slave Market Memorial

The angriest and most important corner of Stone Town: an Anglican cathedral consecrated in 1874 on the exact site of the island's last open slave market. The courtyard holds a memorial sculpture of chained figures, and a small museum downstairs marks the holding cells. Built deliberately on the site by Bishop Edward Steere as a statement.

Religious
Darajani Market, Stone Town 8

Darajani Market

Zanzibar's main bazaar along Creek Road, operating since 1904: fragrant pyramids of spices, fish and octopus from the morning catch, fabric, hardware and controlled chaos. Go before 10 AM for the full sensory experience and the best photo light.

Market
A carved wooden door in Stone Town 9

Caravan Serai

Near the market: a 19th-century inn that housed traders and their goods arriving by caravan from the African interior before shipping out with cloves and ivory. The deep arched gateway once admitted camels - today it opens onto a quieter courtyard.

Heritage Carved door
The Hamamni Persian Baths 10

Hamamni Persian Baths

Zanzibar's first public baths, commissioned by Sultan Barghash in the style its Shiraz-born architect knew from Persia and completed around 1892. Cool stone chambers, steam rooms and shaving niches survive; separate days served men and women in its working years.

Heritage Carved door
Tippu Tip’s house, Stone Town 11

Tippu Tip's House

The home of Hamed bin Muhammed el-Murjebi - Tippu Tip - the most famous and most feared Zanzibari trader of the 19th century, who built an ivory-and-slave empire deep into the Congo. The house is a private residence: admire the facade from the street and keep your voice down.

A Stone Town alley near Jaws Corner 12

Jaws Corner

A tiny intersection with a bench under a carved set of shark jaws set into the wall - the neighborhood's open-air parliament. Order a shot of kahawa tungu (spiced bitter coffee) and, if you're lucky, a slice of mkate ya kumimina from the corner vendor and sit a while.

Culture
Freddie Mercury’s birthplace, Stone Town 13

Freddie Mercury's Birthplace

On Kenyatta Road, the modest building where Farrokh Bulsara - the future Freddie Mercury - was born in 1946 to Parsi parents who ran a small store nearby. There is a small display and photo wall; the pilgrimage is mostly about standing where one of rock's greats began.

Culture
Africa House, Stone Town 14

Africa House

The formerly all-white 'English Club' of the Imperial British East Africa Company era, and the social headquarters of colonial Zanzibar. The upstairs sunset terrace bar is open to all now - the same Indian Ocean view the members pretended not to admire, no tie required.

Heritage Carved door
Kelele Square, Stone Town 15

Kelele Square

A small palm-shaded square in Shangani named - locals joke - for the noise ('kelele') of children playing around an old cannon. The townhouses around it hide some of the best-preserved doorways in town; wander one street inward from the sea.

Heritage Carved door
The Peace Memorial Museum, Zanzibar 16

Peace Memorial Museum (Beit al-Amani)

The tour's northern end point near the creek: a domed 1925 'temple of peace' built to commemorate World War I, housing ethnography and early-Swahili archaeology. Check locally for opening hours - they vary more than any other stop on the route.
